A Chef and His Tractor

I ask you, what other James Beard Award nominated chef in the whole country has close to 4000 heirloom tomatoes planted for his restaurant, or a football field of potatoes, or rows of garlic waiting to send up their scapes?  I’m thinking Alex might be in a pretty small group if you consider what we’re trying to do with him at Cornman Farm.  He spent a good part of Monday handling the tractor to prep the beds for our tomato and pepper transplants and Anna and Jess worked Monday and Tuesday transplanting tomatoes.  We finished that job this Thursday afternoon and will transplant peppers through the weekend.  That leaves some brassicas and okra and sweet potatoes to be planted and the garden will be completely packed with plants.  We’ve been harvesting some salad greens and radishes and it looks like the peas and some kohlrabi will be ready next week.  It’s a little too hot for my taste in early June but some regular rain is a great thing so I’ll take what I can get.
