Rogue Ales was founded in 1988 by Jack Joyce, Rob Strasser, and Bob Woodell, three corporate types who wanted to be in the food and beverage industry. Rogue's first brewpub was located in Ashland, Oregon and was a 10bbl brew-system. Rogue opened a second brewpub, with a 15bbl brew-system, in May 1989, located in Newport, Oregon. Avery has developed a treatment process for their water that recreates the English hard water originally used to make the first Extra Special Bitters. Blending several specialty hops and malts they create a perfect balance between aromatic maltiness and herbal hops with a beautiful copper hue. Fat Dog has an inviting silky black color, and a prominent roasted malt character, with a chocolaty coffee-like finish.
