Frankenwalnut Book Event: A Children’s Story About Being Different

Authors Don and Alex Hicks holding up their children's book Frankenwalnut.

A little spooky. A lot nutty. A whole lot of heart!

Monday, October 12th | 5pm-7pm | Adults $25, Kids $12.50

Just in time for Halloween, join us for a special children’s book event featuring Frankenwalnut, a funny and heartfelt story by Ann Arbor authors Don Hicks and Alex Hicks about bullying, friendship, and finding the courage to be yourself.

When Frankenwalnut discovers that being different can make you a target, he learns that standing up to bullying—and standing up for others—can be more powerful than being the biggest, loudest, or scariest monster around.

Come meet the authors, hear the story behind Frankenwalnut, and celebrate a book with an important message wrapped up in plenty of Halloween fun. Expect laughs, a little spookiness, and lots of feel good moments! There will even be live music, and of course delicious snacks! This event is perfect for young readers, families, and anyone who knows that the best monsters have the biggest hearts. Each ticket includes a copy of the book, and proceeds will be donated to Mott’s Children’s Hospital and The Trevor Project. The authors will also match the donations!

Come for the Frankenwalnut. Stay for the message: there’s no such thing as too different to belong.

About Authors Don and Alex Hicks

Don Hicks is an author, inventor, musician, and father to three children who don’t like to go to bed early. He is also the owner of the Blue Llama Jazz Club & Restaurant in Ann Arbor.

Alex Hicks is a boy who loves all things Halloween, scary stories, soccer, and staying up late.

The one thing that could get Alex to stay in bed and get some sleep is an original story. Over the course of several years, Alex would ask for a new story each night. Every evening, Don would create the next chapter of an adventure. Out of this bedtime collaboration, the adventures of Frankenwalnut, Cassius Cashew, inside and beyond the village of Walnuttia, came to life.

Don and Alex live with their family, mother and wife Anaïs, and daughters and siblings Maddie and Chloé, in places as magical as the world they created, whether in Paris, Key West, or Ann Arbor, Michigan.
